Meetings

Our chapter meetings are held in the afternoon on the second Tuesday of each month, September through May.

Our History

Celebrating over 55 years of service to the community, Amherst Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1963 by Mrs. Lillian Robertson in Amherst, Virginia.

Behind the Name

The Amherst name was selected by members as there was formerly a chapter of the NSDAR in Amherst County (1939-1948) with this name. There was also a rich heritage of Amherst history connected with the American Revolution and the French and Indian War. This played a part in the naming of the County of Amherst in 1761 when it was carved from Albemarle County. The new county was named in honor of Sir Geoffrey Amherst, the hero of Ticonderoga. Sir Geoffrey was appointed the English Governor of Virginia, but never actively engaged in his duties here. He never lived in Amherst County, choosing to return to his native England after signing the Treaty of Paris.
