Chapter Information for
Colonel John Banister, NSDAR
Petersburg, Virginia
Meetings
Our chapter meetings are held on the third Saturday morning of each month, September through May in Petersburg.
Our History
The Colonel John Banister Chapter, NSDAR held its organizing meeting on December 20, 1933. At its organization, it had the distinction of being the largest chapter ever chartered by the National Society. Sixty-five members signed the charter on that December day and before the charter was closed the list of members reached 102!
Behind the Name
The Chapter was named after Colonel John Banister, a Revolutionary Patriot, who was a member of the House of Delegates; a member of the first five Virginia Revolutionary Conventions; fought with the American forces under General von Steuben; was elected to the Continental Congress; and subscribed to the "Articles of Confederation of Perpetual Union," the first step toward the founding of the United States of America. Following the American Revolution, he served as the first Mayor of the City of Petersburg.
