Our History
The Colonel Thomas Hughart Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in Staunton, Virginia, on December 21, 1925, by Virgie Irvine Todd.
Behind the Name
The chapter is named for Colonel Thomas Hughart, born in 1729 and died in Augusta County, Virginia in 1810.
He and his wife, Rebecca Estill Hughart, are buried at Rocky Spring Church Cemetery, Augusta County, where a monument was erected in their memories.
Thomas Hughart received a land grant for service in the French and Indian War. During the American Revolutionary War, he was promoted to Colonel of the Second Division, Augusta County troops. In May 1781, he and his troops were ordered to join the army of General Lafayette in King William County, then following Cornwallis in his retreat.
After the war, he served as a justice of the county and high sheriff almost to the time of his death.
