The Old Custom House in the Yorktown Historic District.
Meetings
Our chapter meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month, September through May.
Our History
Comte de Grasse Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on February 2, 1922 by Mrs. Emma Leake Chenoweth, in Yorktown, Virginia. It is a very active chapter with 169 members.
Behind the Name
Francois Joseph Paul, Marquis de Grasse-Tilly, Comte de Grasse was a french naval officer and a hero of the Battle of Yorktown. Since 1924 our chapter members have owned and maintained the Yorktown Custom House located on the corner of Main and Read Streets in historic Yorktown. The Custom House, built around 1720 by Custom Agent Richard Ambler, occupies a unique place in American History. Listed on the Virginia Landmark Register and National Register of Historic Places, the Custom House is also one of only twelve Historic Custom Houses in the United States. Maintained solely by the chapter, the Custom House also hosts a museum and has been open to the public on Sundays from June to October since 1930 at no charge.
