Meetings

Our chapter meetings are held one Saturday morning each month, September through May.

Our History

Celebrating over 110 years of service to the community, Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1945 by Mrs. Mrs. Robert LeRoy Byrd in Manassas, Virginia.

Behind the Name

The chapter was named for our founding regent's great-grandmother, Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill. She was the daughter of William McIntosh, a private in the American Revolution.

William McIntosh was born in 1755 in Prince William County, Virginia, and enlisted in the Virginia Regiment in Dumfries on February 4, 1776. He served as a private in Captain Thomas Ewell’s company of Colonel George Gibson’s regiment. His initial enlistment was for two years, but he re-enlisted and served another three years.

William fought in the battles of Monmouth and Stony Point as well as other minor engagements and skirmishes. He wintered at Valley Forge in 1777 and 1778. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Dumfries, Virginia. He applied for a pension November 4, 1818. He died on October 25, 1846, at age 91, in Mashulaville, Mississippi.
