Behind the Name

Elizabeth Monroe Chapter is named after Elizabeth Monroe, in honor of the first lady and wife of the fifth United States President, James Monroe.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Kortright in 1768, in New York, a daughter of a wealthy merchant. Elizabeth met James Monroe while she was still in her teens and moved with him to Fredericksburg, Virginia they were married. President George Washington appointed James Monroe as Ambassador to France in 1794 and Elizabeth embraced French culture. She was also an effective diplomat, visiting the Marquis de Lafayette’s wife in prison, an act which spared the latter from a death by guillotine.

Elizabeth was an accomplished hostess through her husband’s many other significant positions, including the presidency. She is also known for her role in choosing new furniture for the White House after the war of 1812. Elizabeth died on September 23, 1830, on the family’s Virginia estate, Oak Hill.
