Our History
The Fort Loudoun Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, was founded on December 2, 1921, by Katherine Glass Greene at a luncheon she hosted at Fort Loudoun.
Our beloved founder, Katherine Glass Greene, lived at and owned most of the land and buildings of Fort Loudoun. Virginia State Regent Dr. Kate Waller Barrett formally organized the Fort Loudoun Chapter at George Washington’s Headquarters. By February 20, 1922, the Chapter had completed the appointment of its officers with 54 charter members. Our cherished chapter gavel and gavel stand were created from the original Fort Loudoun wood and are still used at meetings.
Today, the Chapter has more than 200 members, ages 18 to 95, celebrating over a century of service. We have members of diverse backgrounds and interests: military veterans and stay at home moms, lawyers, artists, business and government professionals, students, farmers, educators, medical and health care providers, dynamic retirees, and more! Our chapter covers Winchester and the counties of Frederick, Clarke, and Warren, but we have welcomed members from throughout the United States and as far away as Australia. If you’d like to join, please contact us.
Behind the Name
The Fort Loudoun Chapter takes its name from the fort built in 1756 under the direction of George Washington “for the protection of the adjacent inhabitants from the barbarities daily committed by the French and their Indian allies” in Winchester, Frederick County.
