THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA COMMITTEE
NSDAR established this committee in 1909 with its principal objectives: to keep the flag flying, to protect it continuously under all conditions, and to educate citizens regarding its purpose. The Storage Administration “Illuminate Our Legacy!” captures the NSDAR objectives perfectly! You are encouraged to be creative with your chapter to obtain the Flag objectives. Below are some ideas:
1. Present a Flag of the United States of America, flown over DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C., along with a Commemorative Certificate. Purchased through the DAR Store for the following dates, you can present a Flag in honor or memory of someone special:
· April in honor of the start of the Revolutionary War in 1775. Order by April 1.
· June in honor of Flag Day. Order by June 1.
· September in honor of Constitution Day. Order by September 1.
· November in honor of Veterans Day. Order by October 31.
2. “Adopt-A-School” and Illuminate Our Legacy through our children.
· Encourage 4th grade students to enter the Virginia DAR Flag Essay Contest.
· Distribute table-size flags and flag pins to 4th graders, along with a flag story book.
3. Gift an American Flag to Illuminate Our Legacy.
· A braille flag to a blind or sight-impaired veteran or community leader.
· Give a flag to a friend, relative, neighbor or someone in the community and encourage them to gift it forward.
4. Familiarize yourself with the DAR published “The Flag Code” leaflet and distribute Flag Code leaflets, table-size flags, and flag pins to students, youth organizations, veterans’ facilities, retirement homes, naturalized citizens, etc. These may be purchased from the DAR Store.
5. Include a “Flag Minute” at your chapter meetings. These can be found on the NSDAR Flag Committee website, or you can include your own facts or personal stories about the Flag.
6. Present flag certificates to community individuals and/or groups in recognition of their flying the flag continuously and correctly.
7. Participate in or collaborate with your local Fire Department and others (SAR, CAR, Scouts, Veterans) in hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony.
8. Celebrate Flag Day, June 14th, and other flag holidays with your chapter, youth groups, veterans, and senior citizens. Fly the American Flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance daily!
