Our History
New Kent Patriots Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on June 8, 2025 in Quinton, Virginia with 19 members under Organizing Regent Brenda Sue Johnson Evans.
Behind the Name
The Chapter is named in honor of the patriots from New Kent County, past, present and future. The county was established in 1654 when it split from York County.
Many patriots from New Kent served in the Revolutionary War including the noteworthy James Armistead Lafayette, an enslaved man who was a double agent. His reports to the Marquis de Lafayette helped secure victory during the Siege of Yorktown. The Chickahominy and Pamunkey Native Americans are currently well established in the area and were present during colonial times.
Of note, two first ladies, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington and Letitia Christian Tyler, were born in New Kent.
